Wanda McBurnett Bateman, one of Pine Bluff’s most faithful and active citizens, passed away Friday, February 7, 2020. Her smiling face, hard work, and positive attitude about her community will be missed by many.

Born March 6, 1942 at Sheridan, she was the daughter of the late Arthur Lenson McBurnett and Juanita Nutt McBurnett. She moved to White Hall as a child and graduated from White Hall High School.

As a young woman, she worked for several years at the National Bank of Commerce. Wanda began her long career in real estate as a realtor for B. R. Henry. She began her property management business with the Snooty Fox Apartment Complex, one of the first in White Hall, and owned many other properties. She also operated Margland II Bed and Breakfast Inn for 35 years.

As an active member of Trinity Episcopal Church for many years, she served on the Vestry numerous times and as Senior Warden for one term and Junior Warden twice. She also organized and provided many beautiful receptions at Trinity.

Wanda’s public achievements were many. She served on local boards for organizations such as Neighbor to Neighbor, CASA, and the American Cancer Society. She also championed the annual Summer Cereal Drive sponsored by THV11 and the Arkansas Foodbank. For several years, she was the number one cereal collector and fundraiser, with several larger organizations in a distant second place.

Along with her parents, her brother, Billy Dean McBurnett predeceased her.

Survivors include her daughter, Deana Bateman Bailey; two grandchildren, Alex Bailey and Drake Bailey (who lovingly referred to their grandmother as “Missy”); and her life partner of 40 years, Ed Thompson.

Wanda’s memorial service will be held Wednesday, February 12, 2020, 1:00 p.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church with the Rev. C. B. Baker officiating. A reception will follow in the parish hall. Arrangements are by Ralph Robinson and Son.

Memorials may be made to Trinity Episcopal Church, 703 West 3rd Avenue, Pine Bluff, AR 71601; or to the Jefferson County Humane Society, Post Office Box 2233, Pine Bluff, AR 71613.

I was saddened by the news of Miss Wanda passing . She was a Grand Ole Gal. When I felt alone and down and out with no friends she let me work and do some Christmas paintings on soilders for the fronts of the B&B. I helped wirh the Christmas Day Dinner one time and spilled a plate full if fiid on a young man. I felted horrible about that and went into the kutchen amd cried got the bowl of mouse and sat in floor and starting eating. Miss Wanda came in got one look started laughing at me said hand me a spoon and get to a table. Of course after I apologized to.the young man for the mess I made on him. She was a fine Lady abd will be missed by the community.
My deepest sympathy to The family and Deana.

It will take a whole village to take the place of Wanda! What an exceptional person who cared deeply for our community - it’s people and animals alike. She had a deep concern for the welfare of Pine Bluff and for those that serve our community. This is a huge loss and one that will be felt for a long time to come. It’s comforting to know that she is now with her Lord and Savior. My deepest sympathy to her family.

We, the Staff at St Vincent Infirmary Outpatient Infusion Center was saddened to hear of the passing of Ms. Bateman but we rejoice in knowing that she is in a better place. Ms. Bateman was very kind to all of us. She lit up the room when she entered it with that beautiful smile. She always brought us pies even when she was not coming for treatment. Those pies were delicious. We won't ever forget how kind and sweet she was to all of us. Ms. Bateman will forever being in our hearts. Ms. Bateman had a wonderful spirit that will forever be remembered and we will miss her. On behalf of the nursing staff, Unit Coordinators and Registers, we offer our deepest sympathy. We will keep the family in our thoughts and prayers... Much love to the family and all the friends she left behind. Again on behalf of Breana, Cindy, Debi, Iola, Joy, Laura, Maria, Tanisha, Terri, Wilma and myself (Melissa), we do offer our deepest sympathy

Today we lay to rest a dear friend... words cannot express how much this lady contributed to the Pine Bluff community. The most giving individual I have ever known. She was there for me in some of my darkest moments and wrapped her beautiful loving kind arms around all that came into her path. There will never be another Wanda Bateman. What an impact she made in all of our lives. Rest In Peace my dear friend. Prayers for all the family. May God give you comfort and peace.
